Shanghai 2012
CHOIR AND GALERIE EIGENHEIM presenting their first exhibition measuring space at Fuzou Rd. 19, Shanghai with following artists Zhao Yang (PRC), Lars Wild (GER), Huang Shichang (PRC), Enrico Freitag (GER), Caucasso Lee Jun (PRC) and Konstantin Bayer (GER) I Opening: 09.12.2012 at 8pm
About the Exhibition: measuring space as the title of the first exhibition at CHOIR is dedicated to the first experiences, that have to be made in a new environment. As a Winebar as well as a gallery, the dimension of the space needs to be experienced in a physical and psychological process. How many steps it takes to get from the entrance to the bar counter? Who to move most elegant through tables and chairs, which walls and sight lines are particularly suitable for presentation of art? First experiences in a new place are formative. First nights with wine, conversation and art, among the owners and visitors are like a research on how the prearragements have succeeded. But also the art has to fit into the space as the space to the art! This needs to be meassured as well. Viewing habits have to be shaped, and everybody have to develop a feeling for how walls and spaces are suitable for the presentation of what kind of art. But not at least we have to thank the artists for their confidence. They had no chance in advance to measure the room with the help of other works of art. Measuring space as a exhibition titel is a kind of active not finised prozess what in a way says a lot about how we understand the work between the venue and artists. We want the artists taking part in the process of overcoming the space. With your works we started a kind of first set-up and we want to thank all participating artists for the trust and participating in these first measurement of the space. Anyway, we are honored and looking forward to long nights, initial feedback, and of course the pleasures of wine and art.
Galerie Eigenheim and Choir: Good friendship over many national boundaries is in addition to the mutual interest in contemporary art and the desire to provide a space for art and communication, a basis for the cooperation between CHOIR from Shanghai (China) and Galerie Eigenheim from Weimar (Germany). The combination of wine bar and gallery space as visual and culinary delight is without question a mutual enrichment. The goal is to present international and national art in regularly changing exhibitions in addition to serving international wine. The fundamentally sympathetic attitude can already understand in both of the institutions names. The name CHOIR thus forming a community that acts together, having a closed outward communication, acting for an audience. This is an image which deeply corresponds with the basic idea of Galerie Eigenheim, which means something like „Your Own Home Gallery“. Thus, a space is created in which the guests feel well and warmly welcome, in which they can express themselves freely to encourage discourse, supported by the present of art and perhaps also because of wine consumption. So we can look forward to a collaboration which, at best, forms an intellectual community which inspires each other as well as to stimulate debates and at least having a good time.

Enrico Freitag & Lars Wild at Chivalrous Cantaloup Commune, 111 Liyang Lu, #207, Shanghai / in the context of the 61st second exhibitionrun / OPENING 19.Oct.2012, 6pm
> One year after Chivalrous Cantaloup Commune (Wang Yuhong) and Galerie Eigenheim (Konstantin Bayer) cooperated first, it happend a lot in case of their artistic and curatorial experience. Early this year Wang Yuhong, Lin Yuan und Luo Ling were visiting Weimar and exhibiting at Galerie Eigenheim in Germany. Artists from Galerie Eigenheim were shown by Wang Yuhong at some exhibitions in Shanghai. One can say that a very good relation between this two institution is formed. This needs to be continued! This year Chivalrous Cantaloup Commune and Galerie Eigenheim are showing works by Enrico Freitag and Lars Wild. The two artists having strong unique approach in painting and drawing, both studied at Bauhaus-University in Weimar, both exhibited in Shanghai before. > Enrico Freitag Search and find, work and life are virtues in which the painter not only embody the existence of man, but also can get an insight into the deep work of the artist himself. Freitags works allow the viewer to occasionally delve into dark environments. Perspectives branch deep into the space, portraits become mystical images, which can be personality issues openly, groups of people forming social structures and behaviors, thought patterns get revealed. Protagonists are waiting, but in an active, though contemplative state. At the same time, however, avoid and absent is the part of the image content. Fragments of his own studio environment oscillate with a collage constructed spaces. So the pictures tell about the search for the meaning of individual existence, as well as the painter‘s prozess of searching subject and content. With their picturesque quality, these works beared some resemblance to a fairytale, whilst still maintaining a sense of reality. > Lars Wild In the beginning, Wild‘s artistic concepts were expressed in the form of graffiti. The motivation for such work stemmed from an interest in situations and themes relating to social helplessness and dependency. This was the starting point for what became a regular situation for Wild; being in a state of constant self-reflection and observation. Personal sensitivity allows him to be in tune with subjects and objects in his work. Wild always finds painting to be emotionally confronting. Hence, his work is always sincere and honest. Sometimes he mix this kind of topic with humor like in „the hidden message“.

Friends of Galerie Eigenheim,
since a august Konstantin Bayer is part of the Artist Residence Program at the Swatch Art Peace Hotel Shanghai. The luxurious as futuristic environment, the twelve other international artists, first initial concepts and works are developing - it has taken a bit to get used to live here - Exhibitions are planned, curators and gallery owners are regularly consulted.
Here are some first pictures from the studio number 36 of the Swatch Art Peace Hotel Shanghai. Located directly on the Bund one of the most frequented tourist centers of Shanghai. It is a bit confusing stepping out of your apartment, finding yourself in a crowd of thousands of tourists.
Exhibitions by Enrico Friday, Lars Wild, Michal Schmidt, and of course, a solo by Konstantin Bayer itself are planned to realize - so you can continue to be curious … on this blog you stay up to date.
As in the years 2008/09, 2010 and 2011, Konstantin Bayer will also stop in 2012 for several months in Shanghai. This year he is participating in a Artist in Residence program of the Swatch Art Group. Between July and November 2012 Konstantin Bayer will live and work in the Swatch Art Peace Hotel in Shanghai. Surely in this period, besides realizing the development of their own new works, he will again realize various exhibitions of Weimar artists in Shanghai, or large group exhibitions of International artists. We may be curious what the Year of the water dragon holds for him.

Shanghai 2011
2011 war Konstantin Bayer zwischen dem 27. August und dem 22. Oktober in Shanghai.
ENRICO Friday - Through the Darkness - Opening: Saturday the 01. October 2011, 6pm at Chivalrous Cantaloup Commune, Shan Yin Road No.132, 200081 Shanghai, China - Duration: 05.October 2011
Enrico Friday, born 1981 in Arnstadt(Germany), studied fine arts at the Bauhaus-University, Weimar and is an artist of Gallery Eigenheim (Weimar, Germany) since 2006.
Small sizes are a recurring feature in Freitag’s oeuvre. In these formats, he compresses stories and feelings about grand gestures as well as playful mind games. The selection shown here has a certain dark, mysterious imagery, while leaving room for interpersonal closeness and confidence.
Enrico Freitag´s works are illustrations of a long process which dwells on the subject and content. However, his subjects are broad. This exhibition title, “Through the Darkness” seeks to underline these references. The darkness can be understood as a metaphor for the process of learning and exploring witnessed throughout the refurbishment of German-European history up until its present day condition. The pictures “Urteil, Judgement”, or “Demonstration Effect” are severe and include failure as part of the experience with a gain in the narrative. Others have very clear references to European historical paintings. In this connection Freitag is working systematically and builds contemporary interpretations of historical motifs in his paintings. Thus, for example, “Looking Down II,” is a direct homage to ” Das Angelusgebet / The Angelus” by Jean-François Millet (1814-1875). The protagonist’s hands are no longer folded to pray, as in the image of 1858, but gradually fade away, idly tucked into the subject’s pockets wile he looks down to the ground. This seems like a visualization of our current time and tells a story of our generation in which abundance of information and opportunities are struggling to understand the world. It seems difficult to gain clarity about what is fought for and against. Darkness as something incomprehensible, Large, as part of world politics can be found in “Das große Rätsel”. The black cube in the middle of the conference table surrounded by politicians could be seen as a metaphor concerning the mystery surrounding political events.
All of this is ultimately the responsibility of our imagination and deals again with the dark side.
All this looks like a great depression. Maybe it is ultimately the question of what makes us generally happy in life, that Enrico Freitag is trying to bring us closer to discovering, This is, at the very least, what it aims to show in this exhibition with respect to current day life in Shanghai. I am happy to show the work of Enrico Freitag at the Chivalrous Cantaloup Commune and I would like to thank Yuhong Wang and her teamwarmly for this exhibition´s possibility.kb

LARS WILD and KONSTANTIN BAYER at JOINT - EASTLINK/stageBACK Gallery Shanghai
Eigenheim Gallery artists Konstantin Bayer and Lars Wild are exhibiting at StageBACK/Eastlink Gallery Shanghai from 06th of September untill 26th of September 2011.
Immediately on Bayers arrival back in Shanghai - as of Monday, August 29, 2011 - Konstantin Bayer started to create his newest body of work, “Fragmants and Defragmentations”. Similiar to his previous visit, he is once again dealing with thoughts of the clash between modernism and history, ideals and idols, borders in reality and fiction as well as the position of being a spectator in an exhibition of self-aware works. The medium he is using is highly gritty and tangible in its inclusion of objective collages and photographic installations within combined video works that shape fabricated, three-dimensional atmospheres.
Konstantin Bayer was born 1983 in Germany. He has collected an MFA from Bauhaus University, Weimar and an MA in Communication from Tongji University Shanghai in 2011. Between 2008 and 2009 he studied in Shanghai before returning for a 3 month stay in 2010.Bayer is additionally the founder and art director of Eigenheim gallery in Germany. In a similar subject and manner, he has curated, participated and organized various exhibitions while in Shanghai, including “God Forgive Us” at Island6 Shack, Moganshan Road 116 in 2008, “The Rise of No Revolt” at Yongkang Lu 64 Artspace in 2010 as well as various other exhibitions in Marseille, Leipzig and Berlin. In 2010, he collaborated with stage候台BACK gallery initiating the one day guerrilla art exhibition “M120 – Moganshan Re-used!” at Moganshan Road 120, the place of his first artistic and curatorial residency in Shanghai 2008/2009.
This time Konstantin Bayer brought Lars Wild as one of the Eigenheim Gallery artists into this show. Lars Wild shows large paintings on linen and small drawings on cardbord. Have a look by scrolling down.

SHANGHAI 2010
Dear friend of “Eigenheim Gallery”
in this blog you have the possibility to reflect the curatorial and artistic work of Konstantin Bayer wile his 3 month long stay in Shanghai between May and July 2010. Konstantin Bayer had the possibility to direct independently a small Art space at the new upcoming art area “Yongkang Lu”. Here he realized 3 different exhibitions of Artists represented by the German “Eigenheim Gallery”. A solo exhibition of new artworks done by himself, an solo exhibition of Lars Wild and a big group Show with the artists Enrico Freitag, Julia Scorna, Lars Wild, Benedikt Braun, Konstantin Bayer, Caucasso Lee Jun, Daniel Caleb Thompson and Tilman Porschütz. After a short time this place begun to be an center of a young and active art scene.
With the help and cooperation of different other gallery’s and art Institutions in Shanghai like StageBack Gallery Konstantin Bayer organized a big one day guerrilla outside art event. 5 different gallery’s and more then 35 artists took part, but have a look at the pictures and information’s when you scroll down.
M120 - MOGANSHAN RE-USED!
The rubble site, 120 Moganshan Road in Shanghai, China, is located right next to the gallery district in Shanghai, the so called M50 on 50 Moganshan Road. Just over 10 years ago, artists and galleries moved to an old textile factory located at this address. This complex was threatened with demolition for years while newly build high rises changed the surrounding of this art oasis. Eventually it became more commercial over the years and could so secure its existence.
The modern apartment buildings and new galleries also had other neighbors, the residents at number 120. A typical chinese neighborhood, just as we imagine it in the west. Small lane houses meandered in narrow alleys. Laundry dries above our heads and people cook their meals in the entry ways of their houses. The inhabitants lived in this area for many decades. Even still, when M50 was already established with its cafes and bookshops and the loving art visitors from the West.
Now it is over. 120 Moganshan Road has been destroyed. Most residents are gone, still one graffiti screams off the wall: ” Ha ha! We are still here!” Lost shoes can be found in the rubble, glimpses of wallpaper are visible on certain walls. A daily scene in Shanghai.
Konstantin Bayer, German artist and initiator of the gallery “Eigenheim” in Weimar / Germany knew this neighborhood very well. He curated a small exhibition space, the “Island 6 shack”, during his university exchange program in 2008 at 120 Moganshan Road. This established a continuous dialogue between tradition, art, East and West. Where this exchange took place is now a gaping hole.
After two years, Konstantin met some of the remaining residents again. The already existing mutual sympathy was still in place. In his familiar manner to create art in urban living spaces Konstantin is now planning a 24 hour art project on this site along together with a handful of renowend Shanghai galleries. 2000 m2 demolition land will be revived in order to make space for art and to point out the rapid development and change of life in China as well calling attention on the specific characteristics of temporary urban structure. The demolition site appears now as a counterpart to sparkling Shanghai with its new Expo site and countless renovated facades all around the city.
Generally it is expected of art and artists to identify with the current progressive urban development. But especially artists and creative people often draw the short straw, however, work space gets destroyed or simply turns out to be unaffordable. “M120 – Moganshan re-used” is an example of the positive exchange between people from different parts of the world using art as a common language. There is also a thought to be pointed out to the many creators of our near future. Before everything is gone. Before everything is uniform. Look closely! Art doesn’t need white walls!
EIGENHEIM GALLERY WEIMAR SHANGHAI
a new exhibition at the small art venue at Yongkang Road 64 in Shanghai shows “Eigenheim Gallery Weimar – Shanghai” on Wednesday the 7th of July 2010.
“The Eigenheim Gallery” is based in Weimar (Germany) since 2006. The literal, English translation of “Eigenheim”, your own home”, creates an open-minded and communicative atmosphere as well as a platform for discourse and discussion. More then 180 exhibitions and projects have been realized collectively with over 300 national and international artists and institutions. Over the last few years, the founder Konstantin Bayer, has formed a young, professional and interdisciplinary team, which has advanced the careers of its 8 artists. All these artists have participated in the group exhibition, “Gallery Eigenheim Weimar – Shanghai”. The artists involved are: Enrico Freitag, Julia Scorna, Lars Wild, Benedikt Braun, Konstantin Bayer, Daniel Caleb Thompson, Tilman Porschütz and Caucasso Lee Jun. They show photography, painting, object and video works.
So feel warmly welcome to the exhibition opening at Yongkang Road 64, Shanghai on Wednesday the 7th of July 2010 at 6pm. We are happy to welcome Thomas Arthur Bligh Pryle as our house musician escorting through the evening with art, wine and fun…
THE WILD DAYS - A LARS WILD SOLOEXHIBITION
The rough small space presents “THE WILD DAYS”, a solo exhibition by Lars Wild. Lars Wild is a German artist based in Weimar. His impulsive and complex paintings and drawings confess a psychological grey area of human being and his own inner distraction. He explores a view into a aimless and future fearing young German generations mind. Feel welcome to take a look at this small overview of Lars Wilds work.
Lars Wild was born in Gotha (Germany) in 1981, where he also went to school. He also had his first education/development at the retail business person for Photo technology. After his first education he stopped doing something instead of painting for three years. After this time he started to study fine art at Bauhaus University in Weimar in 2003. 2008 he became grant recipient at the Galerie Eigenheim (Germany) and belonged subsequently to the circle of permanent artist.
Lars Wild belonged to the ‚Gothaer Group‘, which Konstantin Bayer was also a part of. From an artistic and biographical perspective, being part of the establishment of the Galerie Eigenheim also helped with his own professional development. In the beginning, Wild‘s artistic concepts were expressed in the form of graffiti.

- the rise of no revolt -
